The Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan and 21 higher education institutions participated in the 24th European Association for International Education (EAIE) at the Convention Centre Dublin, Ireland from September 12th to 14th. In addition to the “Study in Taiwan” pavilion, Taiwan had two sessions to further increase the international visibility of Taiwan’s higher education and the opportunity of international cooperation.
The Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education of Taiwan (FICHET) has been leading Taiwan’s higher education institutions to participate in the EAIE conference for 5 years. This year, under the coordination of Ministry of Education, FICHET and Feng Chia University, over 40 representatives from 21 higher education institutes from Taiwan attended the conference, and most of the representatives were the Deans of International Offices from universities. In addition to the meetings with the foreign educators, Taiwan booth also held the “Happy Hour” activity during the conference, giving away exquisite gifts such as Chinese knots, Chinese paintings and paper cuttings.

The representatives of Taiwan were given a special privilege this year in EAIE to hold a seminar in title of “The perfect match: Europe and Taiwan”. This was a seminar especially planned to enhance the collaboration between Taiwan and Europe, and the speech of the seminar was delivered by the CEO of FICHET, Dr. Lily Chen. The other seminar held by Taiwanese speaker was delivered by Dr. Kun-Liang Chuang in the title of “Service learning in East-Asian universities”. The goal of promoting the higher education in Taiwan and international cooperation can be reached through these seminars as expected.
The collaboration and interactions between higher education institutions in Europe region and Taiwan have been increasingly active. For example, the number of Mandarin learning student, degree student and exchange student from Europe has grown from 1,846 in 2010 to 2,346 in 2011. The growth rate of international students from the region in the recent 5 years is 12% in average, most of whom are Mandarin learning students, accounting for 62 % of all European students studying in Taiwan. In addition to Mandarin learning, the major subject fields for degree student are Business and Management, Humanities and Sociology. Therefore, in this year’s EAIE, Taiwan’s higher education institutions offered Mandarin Chinese programs, short-term programs, joint/dual degrees and courses in Business and Management, Humanities, and Social Science for degree students with the advantage of “affordable scholarship, quality education, culture diversity and friendly environment” to attract more excellent international students to study in Taiwan and strengthen the cooperation with higher education institutions in Europe.
