2021 Taiwan-France Higher Education Online Roundtable Provides New Impetus for Bilateral Cooperation in Science and Technology
2021-11-05
On October 20, 2021, the Foundation for International Cooperation in Higher Education Taiwan (FICHET) and the French Office in Taipei (BFT) held the 2021 Taiwan-France Higher Education Online Roundtable, continuing a long tradition of regular exchanges between institutions of higher education in both countries to promote bilateral academic exchange, deepen bilateral understanding and to lay a solid foundation for future dialogue on learning, teaching and research.

The roundtable was opened by Taiwan’s Representative Office in France, Ambassador Chi-Chung Wu, and the Director of the French Office in Taipei, Mr. Jean-François Casabonne-Masonnave. Both representatives emphasized two countries’ common commitment to promoting cooperation in higher education, and affirmed the deep partnership France and Taiwan enjoy in educational and cultural affairs. Mr. Casabonne-Masonnave specifically noted how the online roundtable would contribute to the development of new opportunities for cooperation in higher education, student and faculty exchange, and technical training. Ambassador Wu also addressed that France has long been one of Taiwan’s most important international education partners. Over the past three years, the two sides have signed more than 600 cooperation agreements, and the current roundtable comes at a time when academic exchanges between Taiwan and France are stable and flourishing, and provides opportunities for further academic cooperation in the future.

FICHET and BFT each invited representatives of seven universities and alliances to participate in the roundtable meeting, with the Taiwan delegation including representatives from National Chin-Yi University of Technology, National Kaohsiung University of Science and Technology, National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, National Taipei University of Technology, National Taiwan University of Science and Technology, National Yunlin University of Science and Technology and National Cheng Kung University. French institutions and alliances represented at the roundtable included Centrale Nantes, ESIGELEC, INSA Lyon, ISAE-Supaero, Network n+I, ParisTech and Réseau FIGURE. The roundtable included in-depth discussions on two themes: "Synergies and linkages between Taiwan and French research institutions and short-term courses" and "Bilateral internships and innovative education projects". Representatives shared their respective insights and experience in promoting international academic cooperation, along with the current status of industrial and academic exchange between the two countries.

This online roundtable was held to deepen mutual understanding between Taiwan and French scientific research institutions, promote exchanges in key areas of science and technology, and build a consensus for directions of future cooperation. As the global pandemic eases and conditions begin to normalize, this roundtable marks the beginning of a new chapter in international in-person academic exchange for students and faculty.
