Professor Arakawa Yohey from Tokyo University of Foreign Studies gave the speech “Communication in Japanese as a Foreign Language During the Age of Immigration” and established the anchor of the international conference. As the consultant of the Japanese NHK TV station program “Japan-easy” and the columnist of the English edition of Yomiuri Shinbun (The Japan News), professor Arakawa elucidated the policies pertinent to “Comprehensible Japanese”, the sharing of teaching materials and the practice of sightseeing and disaster prevention from the perspective of a foreign language learner in Japanese. He also stated that “Comprehensible Japanese” doesn’t have a fixed usage, for instance, those who are familiar with Chinese characters have an advantage with learning Japanese. The director of the Division of Hotel and Tourism of Suwon Science University, Professor Young-suk Park, observed the function of Chinese characters and presented her speech “Self-cultivation During the Age of Colonization – the social background and language education within Japanese textbooks.” It was mentioned in the speech that the compulsory education of Japan, Taiwan and Korea had been affected by the war, transitioning from self-cultivation to patriotism, using various methods to promote Japanese language education in Japanese colonies.
