To provide guidance to students when examining public issues, enhance their social awareness, and foster their independent thinking and practical problem-solving skills, UT continuously promotes the concept of sustainable development. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we collaborated with our partner institutions to organize workshops centered around the theme of the SDGs. These workshops featured online lectures by international experts and scholars from various fields. The aim was to help students connect with SDGs, improve their English speaking abilities, and gain an understanding of the practices implemented by different countries in their pursuit of global sustainable development goals.

UT held the first workshop series, "2021 United Nations Sustainable Development International Exchange Workshop Series I - SDG 14: Marine Ecology," from September 13 to 16, 2021, inviting Professor Ik Joon Kang from Kyushu University, our partner institution in Japan, and Assistant Professor Yun-Chih Liao from the Department of Earth and Life Science of UT as speakers. The four-day online workshop attracted 37 participants from 5 countries to explore the sustainable management of marine fishery resources and issues related to marine resource conservation. On the final day, the participants were divided into six groups to present their own thoughts related to the workshop's theme and share feedback on their workshop experience.

During the pandemic, to maintain connections with overseas universities, all international exchange activities of UT were conducted through video conferencing, and the first SDGs workshop received positive feedback. As a result, UT continued to plan three more international online workshops with the themes of SDG 4: Quality Education, SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions.

The second workshop, titled "2022 United Nations Sustainable Development International Exchange Workshop Series II - SDG 4: Quality Education," was held from January 21 to 27, 2022, featuring speakers including Professor Kaori Toyoda from Takushoku University in Japan, as well as Professor and Director Shi-Huei Ho and Associate Professor Tzu-Ling Hsieh from UT's Institute of Educational Administration and Evaluation. A total of 103 students from 13 countries participated this time.

Professor Toyoda presented on "Education as a Core Tool to Achieve SDGs in Japan - The Overview of Learning Contexts: Formal, Non-formal, and Informal Learning,” sharing insights into the current state of education in Japan. Director Ho discussed "Quality Guarantee and Lifelong Learning Education in Taiwan," exploring lifelong learning issues in Taiwan. Associate Professor Hsieh explained "Quality Assurance from the Viewpoint of School Teaching and Learning Evaluation Indicators," providing perspectives on quality education from the standpoint of school teaching and learning indicators. On the final day, participants engaged in group discussions, reflecting on and sharing presentations on sustainable education topics.

The third United Nations Sustainable Development International Exchange Workshop, focusing on SDG 3: Good Health and Well-being, took place from February 14 to 18, 2022, featuring speakers including Professors Richard Hsiao and Robert E. Alman from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, one of UT’s partner institutions in the U.S., as well as Professor Yung-sheng Chen and Dr. Szu-kai Fu from UT’s Department of Exercise and Health Sciences. A total of 178 students from 12 countries participated. Professor Hsiao and Dr. Fu discussed "Application of Wearable Technology and Training for Older Adults" and "Exercise for Older Adults with Chronic Diseases," respectively, exploring the correlation between wearable technology and the health of older adults as well as exercise methods for older adults with chronic diseases. Professor Alman presented on "Health and Wellness in Turbulent Times," discussing health and well-being in the turbulent times of the post-pandemic world. Professor Chen focused on "Exercise and Cardiovascular Health," highlighting the relationship between exercise and cardiovascular health. On the final day, participants were divided into six groups for discussions, offering reflections and sharing their thoughts on topics related to sustainable health and well-being.

Through collaborative workshops with partner institutions, UT aims to enhance students' English communication skills, facilitate student exchanges with peers from different countries, and improve students' abilities to independently think about and solve practical problems related to social, public, and environmental issues.
