Khin Maung Htwe | Myanmar
Khin Maung Htwe, from a small village in northern Myanmar, graduated from the Department of Business Administration at National Taipei University. After graduation, Khin Maung Htwe returned to his homeland to start his first business career. Once the first store was successfully established, he displayed a keen eye for business. In 2022, following the end of the pandemic, Liu built his second store in Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar. Liu intends to operate an online shopping platform and expand his business to other cities.
"Taking the brave step out of your comfort zone is the first step towards success."
Khin Maung Htwe, from a small village in northern Myanmar with just over 10,000 people, faced a significant turning point after losing his father in 2003. Struggling with the emotional impact of this loss, he began to reevaluate his plans. During this time, by a stroke of fate, he came across recruitment information from various Taiwanese universities. Even though he had already completed a year of studies in engineering at a university in Myanmar, Khin Maung Htwe resolutely decided to apply to universities in Taiwan. In those days, when 3C products were not widespread, studying independently at home was not feasible. Therefore, he joined a group of like-minded friends at a cram school and diligently worked on the past entrance exam. Through sheer dedication and hard work, Khin Maung Htwe eventually succeeded in gaining admission to the Academy of Preparatory Programs for Overseas Chinese Students of National Taiwan Normal University.
After spending just one week in the Preparatory Program for Overseas Chinese Students, Khin Maung Htwe realized he was not genuinely interested in the science and engineering fields. Consequently, he decided to switch to the social science field. Khin Maung Htwe shared that senior students from the Myanmar Student Association at the Preparatory Program regularly organized trips to Taiwanese universities, which helped younger students like him understand the university environment and the courses offered by different departments. Thanks to this "university journey," Khin Maung Htwe gained a deeper understanding of Taiwan's higher education system and connected closely with National Taipei University.
"The study-abroad experience in the Department of Business Administration served as the foundation for the motivation to embark on entrepreneurship in the future."
After successfully enrolling in the Department of Business Administration at National Taipei University, Khin Maung Htwe starts his challenging study-abroad journey. Unlike the educational environment in Myanmar, Taiwan's higher education system emphasizes independent thinking and academic freedom. These distinct cultural experiences broadened his perspective on the world. The curriculum of the Department of Business Administration, NTPU, is practical and contributes to developing students' independent thinking abilities. Khin Maung Htwe recalled that the most unforgettable professors and courses were "Operations Management" by Prof. Shoun-Der Chang, "Strategic Management" by Prof. Yu-Shih Lee, and "Literature and Life" by Ning-Hui Liu. Khin Maung Htwe recalled that the atmosphere in “Operations Management” was always relaxed, and Prof. Chang used real-life examples to help students understand the operational processes of large enterprises. The content of "Strategic Management" was abstruse, and students often needed to stay up late working on assignments. However, the knowledge gained from these courses greatly aided Khin Maung Htwe’s future entrepreneurial career. "Literature and Life" was an optional course; however, its theme extended to social and political aspects, exposing students to new perspectives. Khin Maung Htwe candidly admitted that he felt Myanmar's society was disconnected from the rest of the world at that time. Therefore, having the opportunity to study in Taiwan and encounter different ways of thinking and understanding what was happening around the world brought him a sense of happiness and fulfillment.
"Effective application of business acumen and management knowledge aids in making informed decisions."
Khin Maung Htwe began contemplating his future career path as a senior student. Drawing from his experience of running student organizations' stalls and working in supermarkets during his university years, he embarked on entrepreneurship using a similar business model. Upon returning home after graduation, Khin Maung Htwe opened a small store in his hometown. Leveraging Myanmar's new economic policies opening up for foreign countries and the improved road infrastructure, he transported fast goods from the big city to his store. During the initial stages of his entrepreneurial journey, he primarily focused on selling daily necessities - food. With a stable customer base and continuous observation and analysis of market trends, he made timely adjustments to his product offerings, which helped propel his business on track.
His store thrived thanks to his precise business acumen, sound decision-making skills, and swift restocking procedures. Despite facing challenges brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic and political changes in Myanmar, Khin Maung Htwe purchased land in Mandalay, the second-largest city in Myanmar, in 2022 and opened his second store there. As his business grows, he intends to enter the e-commerce market and explore new entrepreneurial opportunities in other cities.
"Looking back on life, Taiwan remains the top choice for studying abroad."
When mentioning National Taipei University, even after more than a decade since graduation, one can still easily see the same sunny and shy young man back in Khin Maung Htwe. Khin Maung Htwe is deeply grateful to everyone he met at National Taipei University, especially those peers who burned the midnight oil together and shared joys and sorrows. Every memory in Taiwan, whether sweet or bitter, has enriched his life. Khin Maung Htwe also encourages junior students to study hard and fulfill their obligations as a student, try various job opportunities, and experience a once-in-a-lifetime memory at university. Khin Maung Htwe also happily shares his love for the delicious food in Luodong, Yilan, and the joy of riding a motorcycle along the Cijin port on weekends. Finally, Khin Maung Htwe hopes more Myanmar junior students can come to Taiwan for their studies and contribute to cultivating a new generation of talent.
